John J-H Kim

John J-H Kim has an extensive background in education, entrepreneurship, business management, and academia.

John received his faculty appointment as a Senior Lecturer in the General Management unit of the Harvard Business School in 2011. He created and teaches the second-year MBA course Transforming Education Through Social Entrepreneurship which explores ways in which entrepreneurs are pursuing the use of innovative approaches and technology to transform education (K-12 and higher education) and achieve higher performance. John has also authored numerous cases and articles on education entrepreneurship and EdTech.

Since 2013, John has been the Co-Chair of the Public Education Leadership Project (PELP), a joint project of HBS and Harvard Graduate School of Education. PELP was founded in 2004 to work with some of the largest urban districts in the U.S. to improve the management and leadership competencies and practices of public education leaders. John also created and Chairs the Accelerating Board Capacity ("ABC") Summer Institute, a program designed for The Council of the Great City Schools focused on strengthening school board capacity.

John also founded and oversees District Management Group. Since 2004, DMGroup has been bringing the best management and leadership practices to public school district leaders to develop and implement system-wide efforts that lead to higher student outcomes while improving operations and lowering costs. He is the founding editor of The District Management Journal, a publication which provides actionable insights related to leading and managing public school districts.

Previously, John started and led a school management company with 20,000+ students location in more than 10 states.

John was also the CEO and Chairman of Rakuten USA and an Executive Vice President of Rakuten, Inc. (JASDAQ: 4755), a global Internet services company, and was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company.

John actively mentors entrepreneurs in the education sector. John is also engaged with multiple organizations all having to do with increasing educational opportunities for disadvantaged youths.

John received an A.B. with Honors and an M.B.A. from Harvard University.
