Andria Zafirakou, 2018 winner

Andria Zafirakou is the winner of the 2018 Global Teacher Prize. Andria teaches art and textiles in Brent and has received an MBE for her outstanding services to education.

Following her win of the Prize, Andria has gone on to launch ‘ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE’, a campaign for schools. Celebrated names from arts and culture, including Sir Simon Schama, Melvyn Bragg, and Naughty Boy, threw their weight behind Andria Zafirakou in June 2018, as she launched an innovative campaign to bring artists and arts organisations into schools that are located in deprived London communities.

Artists in Residence signs up leading artists and creative industry figures as well as organisations that promote everything from music and art to drama to dance. They work with schools for a fixed period – ranging from a day to a full academic year. The campaign seeks to involve people operating in the arts at all levels - from major music and movie stars, world leading arts organisations, through to grass roots projects and local up-and-coming individual artists.

Historian Sir Simon Schama said:
“Andria’s Artists-in-Residence programme is a great statement of faith in the capacity of the arts to bring out the very best of school students' creativity, that vital spark which will inspire them to go on to contribute to the community and add to the stock of talent on which our national future critically depends. As one of those Artists in Residence I am delighted to participate in the programme; to give gifted students the confidence ad enthusiasm to set their creativity running; to hear from them, see their work and do what I can to help these creative artists of the future on their way.”
